What does the switch from Gas To Electric involve?

A gas-to-electric switch can be quite a big job but sometimes the necessary one. Especially due to the government ban in 2025, this is when no new builds will be able to have a gas boiler. And then by 2035 you will no longer be able to buy a new boiler or get your old one repaired. The decision is in your hands, do you carry on paying for yearly boiler servicing which you will inevitably have to change, or do you make the switch early and save some money before demand skyrockets?

But it wouldn’t be the best option to pay a larger cost for a full-on switch, especially when there are still many years before this comes into place. So instead, we would reccomend to go room by room and make a gradual switch over time. This is what we call the hybrid hero approach, where 2 heating (gas and electric) systems can co-exist.

If you are wanting to make the switch, we recommend following these steps:

STEP 1: RESEARCH 

When researching to find the best heating solution for you, it’s important you check for these things: good company reviews, making sure the system is independently tested so it’s a safe product, and ensuring it is efficient so that you are saving money on bills.

STEP 2: FIND A NEW ELECTRIC HEATING SOLUTION 

This is to find an electrical heating solution you want to install, (most companies offer a free consultation so take advantage of this!). In a consultation, you should expect that the engineer will bring a mini radiator to physically show you how the product works and assess the property for glazing and drafts. 

STEP 3: ELECTRICAL SURVEY 

You’ll then need an electrical survey by a qualified electrician; they will check if the property is in line with safety regulations and will assess the consumer board to make sure that your house can withstand the increased electrical output, this will ensure it’s safe to have more electrical appliances. Traditionally, most UK houses are designed for gas heating and not electric. This means there is often not enough electric supply on the property.  That’s why this step is essential for those switching from gas to electric.

STEP 4: GAS REMOVAL 

The next step is the removal of the old gas radiators and any other heating appliances, this can be roughly £50 per rad, dependent on the work needed. Note, it may be a larger cost if pipes need to be disconnected, usually under the floorboards.

STEP 5: FIND A NEW WATER SOLUTION

The final stage is then organising a water solution for your home as in most cases your gas boiler will be removed, this is usually £100-£500.
