RTS Meters & Economy 7 - What's Going To Happen with the Switch Off

RTS Meters & Economy 7 - What's Going To Happen with the Switch Off

As you’re probably aware if you’ve come across this blog, RTS meters are due to be turned off on Monday the 30th of June, 2025. And you may be confused by the fact that information about the switch off’s effect on economy 7 is very much ‘up in the air’, particularly in Scotland. Well we’re here to help, and clear up that confusion as best we can.

What are RTS meters?

RTS stands for Radio Teleswitch Service, and some meters use these radio signals to switch between peak and off-peak rates. The technology that supports these meters is what is due to be switched off in June this year, meaning they’ll no longer be able to function properly like they do now.

RTS meters control some older economy 7 meters (known as white meters in Scotland), leaving many consumers confused about whether they’ll be affected by the switch off.

In short, yes. Your heating will be affected if you are currently using this service. It’s unknown what the effects will be, however, you may be left with your heating permanently on or permanently off. This is because the meter won’t be able to detect tariff changes, resulting in the concept of Economy 7 no longer being feasible.

This doesn’t mean that you’ll be left without any heating though so don’t panic. Your energy provider SHOULD provide you with a free smart meter. If they haven’t contacted you about this, we’d recommend getting in touch with them yourself!

But simply replacing your meter also doesn’t mean that your heating will be magically fixed and remain how it is now. Your bills will still change because Economy 7 will change. It’s currently unclear whether it will still exist, slightly differently, or be completely phased out.

What does this mean for you?

RTS meters are 100% going to be phased out. But what about Economy 7?

Some electric boilers and night storage heater are fully reliant on RTS meters to make use of Economy 7 rates. Due to the exact future of Economy 7 being unclear, it would be wise to think about your options now. Even if this means getting several quotes so that you’re prepared if you do choose to change providers in June.

A potential solution

Here at Trust, we’re extremely proud to announce that we’ve officially partnered with Octopus Energy, the UK’s most awarded energy supplier.

This now means that Trust Electric Heating customers make use of their Cosy Tariff.

Octopus Energy’s Cosy Tariff is an option that follows a similar principal to Economy 7. It involves customers having 3 times of day at a cheaper tariff, adding up to 8 hours of the day at 51% cheaper rate. For more information on this tariff or to check the rates for your postcode, click here.

Thanks to our NEOS electric radiator now being compatible with Octopus Energy’s cosy tariff, we’re able to provide our customers with…

So on top of saving up to 51% on your energy bills thanks to the Cosy Tariff, you can add on the extra savings that you’d make by using the NEOS to heat your home! This is due to the NEOS being built to save your money. Since the design and engineering behind the NEOS has combined all of the best attributes of other electric heating models, it ensures that your space is heated up quickly, efficiently and most importantly, effectively.

Click the following links to see how the features contribute to saving energy AND money:

  • Soapstone core - the inner element storing heat to release after electricity has been turned off

  • Aluminium casing - 290x more conductive than the standard material used for radiators, meaning FAST heat up time

  • Cool-wall and serpentine technology - the patented design that prevents heat loss to the back air and holds air for longer, meaning it’s warmer when released

  • Quadvex convection - double the usual convection of modern radiators means double the heat in the same amount of time
