Upgrading your home’s heating system with electric radiators is a fantastic project for those looking to switch to energy-efficient heating systems and reduce both their carbon footprint and energy bills. Speaking of money, some people like to waive the installation fee by installing their new electric radiators themselves. Whatever your reason, we’re here with a step-by-step DIY guide to help you install your new electric radiators safely, but be aware of the potential complexity of installing electric radiators and follow the guide carefully.
Choosing the right spot to install your new electric radiators may be the most crucial step in the whole installation process. While you want them to look good, you need to consider the best spot for heat distribution. Additionally, it’s important to assess the home’s electrical system when choosing the installation spot to ensure safety and compatibility. Here’s our must-do’s when considering where to install electric radiators:
Power Supply: Ensure the spot you’ve chosen is near enough to a power supply so that you can plug it in. Don’t make the rookie error of hanging a radiator too far away from a power source and then realising you need an extension cord!
Clearances: Here’s the important part - there must be at least 10cm of clearance below the radiator for proper airflow and heat circulation, you won’t feel the benefits otherwise. Similarly, keep 10cm between the radiator and any windowsills or overhangs to prevent heat from becoming trapped. And finally, ensure there’s at least 30cm (12”) of clearance above the radiator to any other electrical installations for safety and effective heat distribution.
Before you start, make sure you have the necessary tools:
Drill
Spirit level
Screwdriver
Measuring tape
Now it’s time to get to business. Before mounting the new electric radiator, you need to disconnect and remove any old storage heaters. If you’re installing a NEOS electric radiator you’re lucky as we’ve made this step as easy as we can for you.
Mark the Drill Points: firstly, you need to mark where you’re going to drill the brackets to the wall. With the NEOS we’ve made this super simple, the lid doubles as a stencil to show you the distance needed between each bracket. Then you can just mark where you need to drill the holes.
Drill Holes: Carefully drill the holes as marked. Ensure you use the appropriate wall plugs and safety screws where needed.
Attach Brackets: Secure the mounting brackets to the wall using the screws provided. It’s vital to ensure that these supports are fixed solidly; the safety and stability of your radiator depend on it.
Hang the Radiator: With the support bars securely fastened, you’re ready to mount the radiator itself. Insert the bottom hooks into the lower slots of both support bars, ensuring they click into place. Lift and balance the radiator as you position it onto the lower support hooks. Tilt the top part of the radiator away from the wall to insert the upper hooks into the corresponding upper slots on the support bars, and gently shift them to align and secure the radiator.
Simply plug your electric heater or electric radiator into a standard wall socket and switch it on. No need for complex wiring—just a simple plug and play! If you prefer a hardwired setup for your electric heater, you’ll need a qualified electrician to do this. We can also provide professional hardwiring if you choose to have your radiators installed by us.
Configuring the thermostat is the final step and depends on which type of thermostat you have chosen. For detailed guides on each thermostat option, click here.
