Why is Gas Ruining Our Planet?

Why is Gas Ruining Our Planet?

Many people know that gas is harmful to our planet but don’t know why, in this this short blog we’ll highlight the key problems that gas causes and their effects on our planet.

Hydraulic fracturing, which is used to extract gas which heats most homes, causes a massive amount of damage to the planet and puts the price up for gas because this process is more expensive. Fracking generates masses of wastewater which contains harmful chemicals that can leak into ground water, this has happened a few times in the US. The effects of this are devastating, animals dying, habitats destroyed and even public health hazards. With heating being the biggest source of CO2 from most homes, outweighing flying or driving. We feel somewhat responsible, being a heating company, we are trying to work towards a more sustainable solution. However, gas is still responsible for 40% percent of our electric this isn’t ideal, but this will continue to decease and electric most likely will be seen as an efficient replacement.

The Greenhouse Effect

The greenhouse effect is caused by excess gas being pumped into the air during the extraction. Gas is by the far the most common method of heating in the UK, with over 80 percent of gas imports to the UK being used to heat homes. When gases in the earth’s atmosphere trap the sun’s heat this results in the earth being warmer (a normal process). But when the output of gas is excessive, too much of the sun’s rays are trapped - causing global warming and climate change!

The main greenhouse gases are methane which comes from landfills and agriculture, nitrous oxide, which is from fertilisers, and fossil fuels (like CO2).

Effects of climate change as a result of the GreenHouse Effect

Global warming as a result of heating our homes causes a shift in temperatures and weather patterns.

Our seas absorb as much as 1/4 of all man-made carbon emissions however the ocean has become 30% more acidic than before the industrial revolution, this is a result of climate change.

With 23 million homes on gas in the UK, this use contributes to these effects, so the government are aiming to scrap gas entirely. The government have a gas boiler plan taking place as early as 2025, meaning some of these environmental effects will be less common. As a result, this will combat the energy and environment crisis, forcing UK homeowners to shift from gas to electric.

The Greenhouse Effect

These are effects on the planet caused by using gas to heat our homes.

Rising sea levels

Acid rain

  1. Rising sea levels cause our planet a lot of damage such as wearing down cliffs over time. This causes cliffs to fall into the sea, sometimes ruining homes and causing more damage to the sea.
  2. Wet land flooding can also be caused by rising sea levels which in turn ruins crops.
  3. Loss of animal’s habitats resulting in illness and death
  1. Harmful to fish and other creatures which has a knock-on effect on ecosystems and coastal communities, it is estimated to have cost the oyster industry millions of dollars and thousands of jobs.
  2. Harmful to trees, soil and rivers
  3. Causes paint to peel
  4. Causes chemical weathering on bricks and statutes
  5. Can influence human health.

Heat waves

Intense droughts

  1. Puts a strain on emergency services
  2. Strains on water
  3. Strains on transport
  4. Increased chance of power shortage even blackouts
  5. Increased ozone
  6. Risk of illness for example heat stroke
  7. Increased risk of wildfires
  8. Increased chance of crops being destroyed
  1. No drinking water for people nearby resulting in illness
  2. Poor air quality
  3. Increased risk of illnesses like west Nile virus caused by the stagnant water the mosquitoes breeding because this is the only water available
  4. Strain on eco systems many animals, cannot find water
  5. Increased risk of wildfires, releasing harmful smoke and destroying wildlife and even taking life’s
