Soapstone is a metamorphic stone which is mined from the ground. It is formed over millions of years from sedimentary rocks that were buried and heat and pressure transformed them into soapstone rock.
Soapstone was used thousands of years ago for a variety of purposes. In ancient times, it was used to make bowls, cooking utensils, and figurines. It was also used as a writing surface in many parts of the world, including Egypt and China. Today, soapstone is most commonly used for countertops, sinks, industrial purposes and radiators. It can withstand extremely high temperatures which prevents it from cracking and other faults, it is also resistant to stains and scratches.
One of the most notable characteristics of soapstone is its high talc (mineral) content which makes it an easy material to create a high-quality product from. This, combined with its durability and resistance to heat, makes it an ideal material for many industrial and domestic uses, like radiators…
Why do we use soapstone?
We are one of the only electric heating companies that use a soapstone core and through intense research, we believe it is more durable than a clay core, otherwise known as chamotte. This is because clay, unlike soapstone, isn’t non-porous therefore the moisture in the air can make it crack. Other reasons soapstone is an ideal storage stone:
1.High Heat capacity
Soapstone absorbs and retains heat for long periods of time, this means you will get a consistent room temperature without using electricity.
2. Durability
Soapstone can withstand very high temperatures without breaking or cracking, this is why the NEOS has a 25-year guarantee.
3. Non-Porous
It has a rain-like coat which doesn’t absorb water, which prevents cracking and breakage, unlike other stones on the market.
4. Energy Efficiency
Soapstone stores heat very well once the power is turned off - this will give you heat without using electricity, saving money on your energy bills
Soapstone is a unique material that has many practical and aesthetic uses. Whether you’re looking for a durable countertop material or an electric radiator, soapstone is definitely worth keeping your eye out for.
