Here at Trust we’re all about being transparent and truthful, so we’re not going to sugarcoat the fact that electricity tariffs are higher than others, like gas. However, that doesn’t mean that electric heating has to cost more than gas to run. In this blog, we’re going to outline the initial costs and running/maintenance costs to prove that converting to electric heating isn’t going to break your bank and could provide you with long-term savings.
There are several types of electric heaters, each with different price tags. We’re aware that 1kw = 1kw out when it comes to electricity, meaning 100% efficiency. However effectiveness is what provides competition between different models. Those that work more effectively tend to be more expensive, but also provide better value over time. It can be tough choosing an electric heating model because of this, and we know that one model doesn’t suit everyone.
For example, cheaper models like panel heaters or small oil heaters would be suitable for temporary supplementary heating but wouldn’t be realistic for heating your entire property for any length of time. They may seem cheap to buy and easy to ‘plug in and go,’ but they would also need to be plugged in and switched on 24/7. So, they’re not the most effective!
Other models, like our NEOS, are designed and built to be used for long periods of time so they can heat your home all day without draining your bank.
One key bonus when it comes to electric heating is the fact that installation is unobstructive, meaning no pipework is required. This provides a quicker, easier, and cheaper installation process than gas, for example.
The installation of electric radiators can also be compared to heat pumps - another top heating option in recent years. Heat pumps can take up to 5 days to install, depending on the work required. Some homes may need walls drilled or trenches dug to make space for pipes and a water cylinder, which is a key point to consider if a heat pump is one of your options.
Due to its design, the NEOS electric radiator is incredibly light, compared to some other electric radiators. This means that they only take around 20-30 minutes (each) to install reading the blog linked here. Don’t worry though, we’d do the installing for you!
Other than set electricity tariffs, there are many factors influencing the running costs of electric radiators. For example, insulation, window glazing, usage habits, and the efficiency of the heater can all affect your running costs.
Our NEOS electric radiator is built for low running costs, and here’s why:
Soapstone core: Our soapstone core retains heat within the radiator and continues to release it for 20-40 minutes after the electricity has been switched off. This means more heat without paying for more electricity!
Aluminium casing: Aluminium is 290% more conductive than mild steel which is the most common material used for other electric heating options. This means the NEOS can heat up faster, meaning you’ll have a warm house faster!
Serpentine & cool wall technology: Our patented cool-wall technology ensures that heat is sent into your room rather than being lost to the back wall like with many other models.
Dual convection: Double the amount of flutes compared to other models means double the heat distribution and faster heat!
Enhanced controllability:Three different thermostat options means a solution to fit everyone. Each of these provide programming options to optimise the NEOS and fit it to your lifestyle, meaning you’ll no longer be heating spaces that you’re not using.
For more information on these features (and more that may save you money on your heating) download a FREE copy of our running cost guide. You’ll also find our research evidence with the University of Huddersfield to support each of our claims, displaying how the NEOS works in comparison to other electric options.
Generally, electric radiators don’t require regular maintenance or checks. However, cheaper models tend to need replacing faster and don’t have a long lifespan. The NEOS electric radiator, however, has been built to last. Therefore, every single radiator we build comes with a 25 year guarantee. AND the NEOS has a modular design which takes this one step further. Not only can the radiator be taken straight off the wall to make any adjustments or repairs, but the panels are all individually built so that they can be replaced without having to replace the entire unit.
Not only do the running costs of electric heating make the initial cost seem worthwhile, they also provide the potential for lower costs in the future, as more people switch to electric systems in a bid to create a greener grid and meet the governments net zero goal. Take a look at what we call the ‘Zebra Solution’ to see how you could heat your home efficiently while producing zero emissions.
Low maintenance, high efficiency, potential savings on energy bills and sustainability make electric heating sound great, right? We’d say so!
